Tell us a bit about you and your dog/s and your canicross experience so far
I have a working lab called Daisy who I started canicross with on 1st January 2021 as a new year’s resolution – we both absolutely loved it and were gaining SO much from it together. Daisy was also an agility dog at the time who had competed for a few years and had qualified for Crufts! Hence why canicross was perfect for our fitness. Sadly Daisy was forced to retire from agility and canicross in September 2021 due to an unexpected health issue (not caused/related in any way to Agility or canicross). I was so gutted and Daisy was very confused as to why she couldn’t play anymore. In May 2021 my younger dog was born – she’s a working cocker called who has just turned 18 months at time of writing. She’s old enough now to start canicross with me, I have really missed it and I’m sure my mad spaniel will love it!
Tell us about how canicross has helped you and your dog/s and your biggest achievements
Canicross greatly benefited my lab and me as it really improved our fitness and it was something we could do together. It’s really good for our dogs fitness for them to be travelling at a constant pace for a longer period of time rather than charging around fields all the time. This is super important too, but canicross gives more controlled fitness work. I can’t wait to get started with my youngster now too who will soon be reaping the same benefits!
What are your goals and plans for the future?
I would love to work up to some cool distances with my working cocker and it would be awesome if we can get to a point where I am confident enough in myself to enter us into a few races!
